Travel Postcard: Malnad Monsoons

Traditional Malnad house
Shot this at my host's place during my Malnad trip this monsoon season. A traditional house in Malnad region of Karnataka has slanting thatched or clay tiled roof and a ground level yard right in the center of the house. Being prone to heavy and continuous rains, this architecture helps collect rain water sliding off the roof into the yard.

Malnad area is a treat to stay during monsoons and gets its share of sunshine and crowd despite the heavy rains. For the resort in the picture above check out

  1. Good to know that rain water harvesting was followed quite traditionally. I wish the more modern house does something to store the rain water..
