Relax with French flavours in Kerala

With Kerala being an old Portuguese colony, I could almost smell a bit of European cakes in the guest houses of Kovalam. But Varkala had me by surprise. I had heard of Varkala to have become a backpackers and retirees destination. Again, that is contradicting for me. I would think backpackers to Asia look to rough it out and retirees relax in 3 star+ luxury. North beach in Varkala just turned out to be a place housing above average - semi luxury guest houses.

As you walk along the cliff top, you see the lovely Arabain sea to the west and the other side lined with restaurants, resorts and guest houses. The restaurants have fancy foreign names. Cafe Del Mar is one such. I had this tasty French toast topped with a banana slice, raisins and honey for breakfast. It is not traditional European but definitely sumptuous to make my day on a lazy sunny holliday.

When you head to the same restaurants for dinner, there is often entertainment. Live. These kids from the nearby villages or the kids of workers put up a dance performance almost every evening that we were in Varkala. What's more? Their costumes are color co-ordinated and they dance in sync to the latest Malayalam song. Talk of supporting local artists!

If sun bathing and relaxation is what you want, you should find your way to the North beach in Varkala. And for yoga and ayurvedic massages as well, Kerala pulls in its share of tourists. I felt some of the Ayurvedic resorts and guest houses were over priced, definitely not in the budgets of backpackers or average Indian travelers. But I guess, this is no Goa to offer the huge range of accommodation choices. It is the single beach that has the foreign and Indian holiday makers. Most of the piligrims who visit Papanasam beach, stay in town in cheaper lodges.

  1. You seem to have had a nice time in Varkala. It definitely is one of the best beaches I have been to.

  2. Kerala is really such a Calm and peacefully places.
